The top element of this work is registered in the archives of the Calder Foundation, New York, under application number A07953. The base is separately registered under application number A05180.

At some point soon after it was made, the base for Black, Yellow, Red was erroneously switched with the base for another work after both works had left the artist's studio. The sculpture has remained in this state since it was sold by Perls in 1961. It is the intention of the Calder Foundation to reunite the base with this top in the future.
