On spreading circular foot chased with foliage, the stem formed as a tree trunk, the scroll branches supporting the lobed cylindrical bowl, chased with panels of flowers and foliage, the detachable lobed cover with later detachable rose finial, the body engraved with Royal monogram GR with Royal crown above, marked on body and cover, the finial unmarked

Archibald, 4th Earl of Rosebery (1783-1868), was born at Dalmeny Castle, Linlithgowshire, on 14 October 1783, eldest son of Neil, 3rd Earl of Rosebery, and his second wife Mary, daughter of Sir Francis Vincent of Stoke d'Abernon, Surrey. After graduating from Cambridge he sat in Parliament for Helston and then Cashel, and on the death of his father in 1815 succeeded to the Earldom. In 1828 he was created a peer of the United Kingdom by the title Baron Rosebery of Rosebery, Midlothian. In 1840 he was made a knight of the Order of the Thistle, and from 1843 to 1863 was Lord-Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire. He died in Piccadilly on 4 March 1868.
