During Pautrot's (d. 1874) short but distinguished career as an animalier sculptor, he produced many fine models characteristic of the height in the movement in France. Exhibiting at the Salon from only 1861 to 1870, he concentrated his interests on game birds, such as pheasant, grouse and partridge, and on hunting dogs. This impressive pair of studies epitomises Pautrot's style which, in essence, records and glorifies aristocratic country pursuits. The models proved very popular and were edited in no less than five sizes, ranging from a miniature version of only 5¼ in. high, to the present near-life-size casts.
