An old estate owned by the Avril family "First Consuls and Treasurers" of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from 1756 to 1790. Of the permitted 13 varieties the Avril's at Clos du Papes plant mainly Grenache followed by Mourvedre then Syrah and up to half a dozen other varieties. Despite much rain in 1996 some excellent wines made in Châteauneuf. M.B.
