UNDERGLAZE-BLUE KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN THREE COLUMNS AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
The pear-shaped body with a wide mouth rim and standing on a high spreading foot, incised around the body with archaistic taotie masks reserved on a key-pattern ground, between bands of key pattern around the rim and taotie masks around the foot, covered on the exterior with a pale blue glaze stopping neatly around the foot rim, the interior and the centre of the base glazed white

It is very rare to find clair-de-lune-glazed porcelain pieces of this archaistic form and design, and no other examples appear to have been published. Compare a clair-de-lune vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, also of zhi shape but applied with two chilong handles, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Monochrome Porcelain, no. 89, p. 96.
