A thirty-six-plate bowl of distinctive akoda nari shape signed Yoshimichi Saku, fitted with a seven stage mixed metal tehen kanamono [decoration for the hole at the top] and a kasajirishi no kan [ring] to the rear, a maedate [fore crest] of gilt wood of a tsubame [swallow], associated, the neck guard of close fitting Hineno jikoro type, its fukigaeshi edged with fukurin [metal edging] and a gilt mon [family crest], iron menpo [half mask], probably associated, with a brief yodarekake [throat defence], Bishamon gote [sleeves with shoulder guards attached], a two piece nuinobe do [cuirass] with detachable kusazuri [tassets], iyo haidate [thigh guards] and shino suneate [shin guards], the armour russet lacquered with the exception of the shikoro [neck guard] and the yodarekake [throat defence] which are black all laced in mid-blue lacing in sugake [spaced] style with the exception of the kusazuri [tassets] which are in kebiki [close lacing]

Lot Essay

There were two men of the same name working at this period and signing the same way. Only by careful examination of the signature can a differentiation be made between the two. The signature on this helmet would seem to be that of Iwaki Yoshimichi (1521-1569).
