Frink was always emphatic that her figures did not have an allegorical significance. She was merely observing them and wanted to convey her fascination with the expression on a face or the movement of an animal. In explaining her interest in the relationship between man and animal she explains how powerful she found the bond and trust between the two 'We had a horse of our own in France. It used to be out grazing all night and in the heat of the day we brought it in to the stable to lie down, where I could observe it carefully. I think there is something very beautiful about a horse lying down' (see C. Haenlein, Exhibition catalogue, Elisabeth Frink, London, Maltzahn Gallery, 1974, introduction).
