'The figure of the Sentinel derives from Talos, the armed guardian of Crete, who was made from bronze. His guardianship is, of course, a fiction, but he is believed capable of defending the place and people take comfort from him. A certain tranquillity lies in his stupid presence, a certain comfort. He has no brains and no arms, but looks very powerful' (see M. Aryton, op. cit., p. 106).
