COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Michael Mark, CHESSMEN PRACTICAL AND ORNAMENTAL, exhibition catalogue 1986, fig.17.
Reference is made to comparable bust sets probably made in Dieppe, during the 18th and 19th century. The bishops are caricatures of 18th century courtiers, modelled with tricorn hats. Sets are found with simply turned kings and queens, rather than carved.
A related set was sold by Cooper Owen, Novemeber 2002, lot 248. The bishops are modelled with tricorn hats, and the knights identified as sea horses. This set was attributed to Nuremberg.
