When the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. commissioned a new work from Calder, his initial vision called for a standing mobile which would hang over the atrium space. The present work is the second maquette from the first state that Calder made for this commission. Ultimately, the building's architect, I. M. Pei, requested a hanging mobile for the space and thus Calder designed the mobile that hangs there today.
