Of tapering slightly curving form with reeded bud terminal, one side engraved and chased with tightly scrolling meandering arabesques overlaying flowering vine strands, the reverse with cloudband overlaying fine scrolling floral sprays, attachment loop with arabesque panel above, surface rubbed, traces of lining inside

The similarities betwee this lot and the previous one are obvious. Apart from the shape and size of the blade, each follows the same rules of design. With the blade pointing down and to the left the design is one of meandering floral tendrils interlaced with split palmette vine while the design the other side is based on cloudband designs. Not only is this the case with these two items. The dagger in the Khalili collection noted under the previous lot has the same arrangement, as does a sword in the Stibbert Collection, Florence (Robinson, Hnry Russell: Il Museo Stibbert a Firenze, vol. 1, pl.60a).

The quality of the engraved work is very high indeed. It is of a standard of work and depth of carvign which is normally found only on imperial items which are normally in gold. Comparison can be made with the work on the scabbard of the sword in the Furusiyya Art Foundation (Cheveaux et cavaliers arabes, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 2003, no.102, p.147).
