Together with the DC-2, the Douglas Dakota DC-3 played a major role in the developement of the KLM. The first DC-3 was taken into service in 1936, the last DC-3 was taken out of service with the KLM in 1965.

The Lockheed Constellation was developed by Lockheed in the late 1930's for TWA, PAN-AM and KLM who were demanding a four engined aircraft for long distance flights. The first constellation to be taken into service by the KLM in May of 1946. The constellation remained in service until 1962 when it was replaced by the jet engine propelled Douglas DC-8.
