The detachable lantern with convex glass panel to the front and polished brass reflecting surface inside, flanked by pierced hinged doors and blinders to the front, mounted with a silvered plaque engraved Barret & Co 10 Halkin Street West Belgrave Square, mounted on a detachble ring-turned hollow shaft taking a brass cylinder for the candle, mounted on an adjustable table clamp, with its original gilt-tooled black leather case, inscribed to the top with the name of the owner JOHN FOWLER ESQ.r QUEEN'S SQUARE PLACE WESTMINSTER, enclosing a green baize lined fitted interior with two extra candlesticks, and a match box, the leather handle broken

John Fowler KCMG, was born in Sheffield in 1817. Fowler was a succesfull civil engineer, working mostly in railway construction. His most famous project was the railway bridge across the Firth of Forth which he designed together with Sir Benjamin Baker. The Forth bridge was completed in 1890 and with a span of 2522.5 metres (8,276 feet) was the largest man made structure of its time. On completion of the project Fowler was made a baronet.
