Formerly attributed to Benjamin West, an attribution which seems untenable, the authorship of the present picture remains uncertain. The picture is datable on stylistic grounds and by the costume to the mid eighteenth century. The canvas type appears to be Venetian and the figures vaguely reminiscent of early Pellegrini, pointing to an artist, perhaps a foreigner, active in Venice around 1750.
