aquatint, 1879, on thick wove paper, a very rare impression of the first state (of three), with wide margins top and bottom, the platemark weakened on three sides (the left and right platemark backed on the reverse with tape), remains of old tape on the reverse at the top sheet edge, minor surface dirt and defects

Pissarro's collaboration with Degas was a significant factor in the development of the artist's graphic work, with the later giving advice on the use of new and innovative techniques. Pissarro would send prints to Degas's studio, to be returned with comments and suggestions. It is possible that this print represents such a stage in the development of the composition (hence the Degas studio stamp).
The year 1879 is a noteworthy year for Impressionist printmaking, as it was then that Degas conceived the idea of publishing a journal of prints, to be called Le Jour et la Nuit, the first issue of which included Pissarro's Paysage sous bois à l'Hermitage (Pontoise). Unfortunately, the project ceased after this first issue, but we can conject that Paysage en Long may have been destined for the second issue.
