Finchale Priory lies on the banks of the river Wear four miles from Durham. It began as a hermitage founded by St Godric around 1115. After 1196, the hermitage became a Benedictine priory, dependent on Durham Cathedral. It was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries in the mid-16th century.
