MAISON CHAMPY
This is the oldest wine merchant in Burgundy, founded in 1720, with cellars in the centre of Beaune which date from the 1400s. Quality has been transformed by new owners, the Meurgey family, who bought the firm in 1990. They also acquired extraordinary reserves of older vintages, tasting notes for which (from May 2003) may be found below AH
To Be Lying in Gloucestershire at Christie's (Octavian) Approximately Three Weeks After The Sale
Offered duty-paid, but available in bond
Beaune 1er Cru, Les Grèves--Vintage 1961
Côte de Beaune. French-bottled: Champy
Tasting note: A first bottle was oxidised and malty, but a 2nd was magical. Autumn leaf in colour, with fragrantly gamey aromas and rich, delicate fruitiness. This has remarkable freshness and length of finish, with chocolate aftertaste. (To be tasted at 6 November Masterclass) AH
