1990 RED BURGUNDY
1990 was a year of record yields in Burgundy. Initially there were concerns that rain at the end of August might have brought about some damaging dilution of the extract and concentration. But the ripening process had been helped by the freshening rains, and natural sugar levels were excellent by harvest time. The red wines always showed splendid depth of colour. As they have aged, their ripe fruitiness, rich tannins and superb flavour intensity have become magnified. The vintage is not characterised by marked tannins, such as have persisted in many 1988s. We have to look back to 1959 to find an example of a big red Burgundy harvest with such superb colours and sumptuous fruitiness as 1990. The best red wines have been slow to reach maturity, however, and there is generally every reason to delay opening them, while waiting for their complex perfumes to develop fully, and their ripe tannins to soften.
