John Skeaping studied at Goldsmiths College, the Central and Royal Academy Schools. In 1924 he married the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. He carved in stone and wood and played a significant role in the beginnings of direct carving during the interwar years. His work is notable for its depiction of animals and equine subjects have always been a major element in his oeuvre.
