Mme Recamier was born in Lyons, the daughter of a local notary. She married the wealthy banker Jacques-Rose Recamier and, 'aided by her considerable beauty, her husband's great wealth and a charming and ingratiating character' she became one of the most sought after women in revolutionary Paris. She was depicted by Chinard in both relief and bust form. A terracotta example of the latter was sold Christie's New York, 28 January 1998, lot 196 for $620,000, (exc. premium).
