The cathedral, Manila's fifth (two had been destroyed by earthquakes in 1600 and 1645) was built by Juan de Uguccioni in 1750 on the remains of the old cathedral and was heavily damaged by the 1863 earthquake. New designs were drawn up in the 1870s and the sixth version of the cathedral was then heavily damaged by a further earthquake in 1880. The subsequent and seventh version of the cathedral still stands.
Andrews, a Hong Kong based correspondent, visited the Philippines in 1857 and published illustrated accounts of life in Manila and the provinces of Luzon in the following years.
