Ignace Pleyel began manufacturing pianos in 1807 and the firm won medals at the various International Exhibitions, including those held in 1827, 1834, 1839, 1844, 1849 and 1855. According to Pierce's Piano Atlas, the firm operated under the name of Pleyel, Wolff & Cie. between 1855 and 1887 when it became Pleyel, Lyon & Cie.
