Cerf terrassé par deux lévriers de grand race (Stag brought down by two greyhounds)

A rare and fine épreuve d'artiste by the fondeur De Braux d'Englure, Cerf terrassé par deux lévriers de grand race is an unedited work, believed to have been cast using one of the two plaster models exhibited at the Salon in 1831 under the title Groupe d'animaux en plâtre (no. 3042). Another bronze épreuve d'artiste, cast by Honoré Gonon and his sons, presumably using the same plaster, was exhibited at the Salon in 1833 (no. 3234) and is now in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see Poletti & Richarme, 2000, p. 405, fig. 425). Minor differences exist between the two models, most notably the stag's antlers, which in the Gonon cast are ten point, whilst here they are only four.
