Cheval attaqué par un tigre may have been originally conceived by Barye for part of one of the groups incorporated in the Orléans surtout de table. Unedited during his lifetime, the plaster and bronze modèles were purchased by Susse at the 1876 Atelier sale. The present cast is almost certainly by H. Brame, who edited the work around 1900.

A preparatory terracotta sketch for this model (lot 562 in the Atelier sale) was sold in these rooms, 25 May 1995, lot 168 ($17,250). Another bronze cast was sold in these rooms, 15 February 1995, lot 180 ($23,000).
