Although academic opinions about the function of this unusual vessel are not definitive, a strong hypothesis is that it may have served as a most unusual porcelain stand for an object on display. The quality of the gilding suggests that it is the product of an official kiln, and may have been associated with another porcelain object, perhaps a vase with a cylindrical lower section to fit inside, or a footed bowl, or wide dish.
