Gandhara, 2nd/3rd Century
Well carved seated in dyhanasana with his hands in the teaching gesture of dharmachakra mudra on a throne supported by columns with claw feet, wearing a voluminous robe falling in elegant folds and spilling over across the rim of the base, his face with a benign expression framed by wavy hair and round nimbus, the center of the base carved with Maitreya flanked by attendants in adoration

The details and expressive hands are well carved. The throne is supported on either side by stylized lion's claws, cf. another example of the Teaching Buddha, in W. Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture at the British Museum, 1996, cat. no. 96.
