with a comb back and downswept arms, solid seat and front legs with hoof feet, the rear legs of square section -- 31½in. (80cm.) high, 23in. (59cm.) wide, 14in. (36cm.) deep

Literature This chair is illustrated in Dr. B. Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, page 262, figure SW7 and in David Knell, English Country Furniture 1500 -1900, Woodbridge 2000, page 314, fig 486. Both authors comment that this chair has a rudimentary form of cabriole leg and also an unusual prototype form of the three part arm which developed in the West country, whereby the two arms are butted at the back corners to form the joint.
