The woman depicted in Woman in Chair is Isabel Dutaud Lachaise, wife of the artist. Isabel Lachaise served as a model for her husband throughout his career. A larger 33 inch version of Woman in Chair as well as a 13 inch version were cast in 1924. The present work is a posthumous cast from a 1924 plaster.
