Roxby Beverley's family added the second part to their name having stayed at Beverley, east Yorkshire and developed an affection for the town. On occasions William omitted the last 'e' from the spelling.
The Collection of F.L. Jenks sold at Christie's on 30 January 1974 included six similar watercolours.
In style he is a follower of Bonington and he was both a friend and pupil of Clarkson Stanfield.
