A founding member of the Royal Academy, Cipriani undertook a reverse Grand Tour having been persuaded by Sir William Chambers in Rome to come to England. He was born in Florence but came to England in 1755 and studied at St Martin's Lane Academy, continuing to draw in the classical Italian tradition and influencing artists such as William Hamilton and Angelica Kauffmann.
