The present work is one of thirteen maquettes which Moore produced for a commission by the firm of Olivetti in Milan. Moore made the small maquettes and chose to have several enlarged and cast at full size, but when a visit to the new headquarters of the company revealed that the final sculpture would be sited virtually in a car park, he declined the commission. The first cast of the full sized Upright Motive No. 1 was placed on an elevated position on one of the hills adjoining the Glenkiln reservoir and, with its strong resemblance to an ancient Celtic cross, became known as the Glenkiln Cross.
