Donaldson was born in Chryston, Lanarkshire, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1932-37, eventually becoming Head of the Department of Painting and Drawing there in 1967.

During his lifetime he was generally regarded as Scotland's finest living portrait painter, having been appointed Her Majesty's Painter and Limner in Scotland in 1977.
