The drum-shaped case surmounted by a spread-winged eagle, the enamel dial signed Collin/A PARIS, above a tablet cast in relief with maidens and putti before a sacrificial altar, flanked by a male and female, he with a writing tablet, she with a book, on a shaped oblong base inset with relief tablets depicting music-making cloudborne putti, on gadrooned and fluted tapering feet

Variations of the model exist, including examples with gilt-bronze figures (see op. cit., p. 295, pl. 4.17.6) and others with figures in biscuit porcelain. A 19th century example of the former was sold in these rooms, 10 October 2001, lot 381 ($10,500).
