FORM THE CELLARS OF CHATEAU TALBOT
A substantial, 101 hectare vineyard and elegant chateau on a rising gravelly plain somewhat inland from Beychevelle and Branaire. The name Talbot, derives from the Earl of Shrewsbury who was killed at the Battle of Castillon which brought to an end to the ownership of Gascony, for three centuries under the English crown. There have been two major families involved in this well-known property, the Marquis de Vaux and the Cordiers. The late Jean Cordier lived at his meticulously maintained chateau which is now jointly owned and run by his two daughters, Lorraine Rustman-Cordier and Nancy Bignon-Cordier. MB
Château Talbot--Vintage 1952
Saint-Julien, 4me cru classé. Château-bottled
A good, firm, well-endowed vintage. Enormously popular - as was Talbot itself - with the British wine trade and their customers. Much, at that time would be shipped en barrique for English bottling.
I have no recent note of this wine, the grapes of which were being picked when I came into the wine trade, but other '52 classed-growth Médocs have held well. With this provenance this half century old wine should be excellent. M.B.
