Wilson Henry Irvine was a member of the Impressionist art colony at Old Lyme, Connecitcut which also included Childe Hassam, Willard Leroy Metcalf and John Henry Twachtman. Irivine is best known for his mesmerizing images of the Connecticut rolling farmland, quiet wooded glens and gleaming salt marshes at different times of the day and season.

Teatime depicts Irvine's daughter, Lois Irvine Simpson and granddaughter, Betty-June Simpson, enjoying tea on a glorious sunny afternoon at Brooksound, the artist's home in Old Lyme.
