A RARE FAMILLE ROSE AND SILVERED ARMORIAL PLATE

The centre enamelled and silvered with the arms of de la Bistrate accollée with those of Proli between greyhound supporters and below a helmet, coronet and crest, surrounded by trellis-pattern in the well, the arms repeated individually around the everted rim between a du Paquier style design of linked feathers, strapwork, shells and hanging drapery

The arms are those of de la Bistrate of Anvers in Brabant and Proli of Milan and Brabant, and a second version is recorded with white enamel in place of the silver in the present lot. There is another service, of the same design, but with the arms of Torriano and Proli. It is quite possible that Nathaniel Torriano, senior supercargo and Chief of Council in Canton in 1721 and again in 1727-8, may have ordered for both sides of the Proli family. A further version of this service also exists, allbeit probably as a result of the Chinese workshop confusing their orders: the design is as in the present lot, but with the additional arms of Charles Boone interrupting the border at the bottom. An identical plate to the present lot is in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, exhibited Chinese Export Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1989-90, pp. 244 and 245, catalogue no.96, and also by de Noordhout ibid. p.69; another from the Mottahedeh Collection, is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, no.459, p.453.
