TWO PAINTED POTTERY FIGURES OF ATTENDANTS

The first modelled standing with both arms held in front, dressed in tightly fitted padded robes with wide collars and sleeves, gathered at the figure's legs before flaring widely to the sides, the various layers visible at the neck and chest as moulded, V-shaped necklines painted in red, pale blue and white, with the outermost border of the pink robe red-dotted at the sleeve edges, the face moulded with soft features with details outlined in red and black, the hair tied back, the second kneeling gracefully, similarly dressed and pigmented, some restoration

For two similar figures, compare Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyingtang Collection, London, 1994, pls. 87 & 88. The modelling is very similar, but the pigments on the example here offered are better preserved; another standing figure closely related to the present one is published in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. I, Kyoto & Tokyo, 1976, pl. 123.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C101x35 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
