Frederick, son of the ill-fated Princess Caroline Matilda and the crazy King Christian VII of Denmark, was regent of Denmark from 1784 and King from 1808. During his reign, Copenhagen was bombarded by the British naval force (1807) and lost Norway to Sweden (1814).
Other miniatures depicting King Frederick VI are illustrated in T. Holck Colding, Miniature- og Emaillemaleri i Danmark 1606-1850, Aalborg, 1991, nos. 22, 449 and 477.
