Castleward was built by Bernard Ward, 1st Viscount Bangor between 1760 and 1763. After the death of Maxwell Ward, 6th Viscount Bangor, the house was handed over in part payment of death duties to the Northern Ireland government, who gave it with an endowment to the National Trust.
