A FINE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN AND CHILD
LATE MING/EARLY QING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY

The deity is seated in rajalilasna with one hand resting on a raised knee, her hair swept behind a diadem accommodating the Amitabha, the topknot partially framed by a cowl, dressed in loose robes opened to reveal the bare chest adorned with beaded jewellery chains, the face modelled to give a gentle expression with the eyes downcast, looking at the infant child resting on her left leg, the child with hands held together in anjalimudra, a gesture of salutation

Compare a larger figure (66 cm. high) seated in lalitasana and holding in front a standing child, from the Chang Foundation, illustrated in Buddhist Images in Gilt Metal, Taibei, 1993, no. 40; where the author relates that according to Buddhist text, iconographic images of this type were worshipped for the fulfillment of virtuous sons and beautiful daughters.
