M.M. London Gazette 27.10.1916.

Mention in Despatches London Gazette 1.1.1916.

Acting Company Quarter-Master Sergeant W.H. Wren, M.M., first entered the French Theatre of War with the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment in early September 1914 and would quickly have seen action in the trenches North-East of Vailly, on the crest of the plateau just beyond the Aisne. In the following month his Battalion was involved in 'severe hand-to-hand fighting' in the capture of the village of Chateau de Flandes, and took serious casualties in an enemy counter-attack on 20.10.1914. But his subsequent 'Mention' and M.M. reflected later services, the former stemming from Field Marshal French's Despatch of 15.10.1915 and the latter almost certainly good work on the Somme. Wren's Battalion took up position in the front line trenches at Beaumont-Hamel in early August 1916 and participated in an attack on "The Quadrilateral" in support of the 8th Bedfordshires on the 15th - both Battalions were checked by heavy enemy machine-gun fire.
