D.C.M. London Gazette 3.10.1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the whole period under review the devotion to duty displayed by this N.C.O. has been a fine example to all those around him. On one occasion a machine-gun bullet penetrated his steel helmet, but, though he was considerably shaken, he insisted on remaining at his post. When an Officer and the Sergeant of another Platoon became casualties, he took command of this Platoon as well as his own, and under very heavy machine-gun fire, continually visited all his posts'.
