Sergeant-Cook Joseph Creese was born in the Parish of Stoke, near Yeovil in Somerset and enlisted in the 7th Hussars in 1855, aged 21 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours, he became one of 155 men of the Regiment to qualify for the 'North West Frontier' clasp to the India General Service Medal, and he was discharged at his own request in 1876.
