Private William Griffiths was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire and enlisted in the 23rd Foot in March 1804, aged 24 years. His subsequent service in the Peninsula, and qualification for an eight-clasp Military General Service Medal, are confirmed in Holme's and Kirby's Medal Rolls, 23rd Foot - Royal Welsh Fusiliers - Napoleonic Period. The same source states that the old Foster Roll lists his christian name as 'John', quoting 'Search AG/10/16831, 16 May 1922', an observation that also applies to the more recent Mullen Roll. Griffiths was discharged in January 1815.
