A fine and rare 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter table relief globe made up of two sets of twelve chromolithographed raised gores and two polar calottes, the applied equatorial with divisions for degrees but unlabelled, the meridian of Paris similarly shown, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with numerous raised islands, Antarctica with some defined and mostly projected coastline and a few notes such as Glaces and Volcan en activité 4000 pieds, the continents with raised areas and coloured in green and yellow and showing towns, cities, rivers and the Great Wall of China (some areas of discolouration, minor repairs to south polar calotte, minor cracks in Carribean, some slight fading to detail) with a brass hour dial at the North Pole, raised on an elegant tapering cast-bronze support, to an ebonised and turned column and stepped circular plinth base -- 21in. (53.3cm.) high

Little appears in the literature on the Dijon makers of Thury and Belnet, although they were obviously a success in the home region, if the cartouche is to be believed, with two first prizes in Dijon exhibitions, and one second prize in Paris. And indeed, this is a finely designed and made globe, with elegantly raised gores, and discrete colour and cartography. This example is in comparatively fine condition, relief globes being subject more than most to the ravages of time due to their delicate and often lightweight construction.
