Descriptif du lot

Amato, by Velocipede out of Jane Shore, was bred and owned by Sir Gilbert Heathcote at the Durdans which adjoined Epsom Racecourse. Thus, although he started at 30-1, he was a popular 'local' winner of the 1838 Derby, having been trained on the Downs by Ralph Sherwood. Ridden by Chapple, he was described as a 'little fifteen-hand horse', had never run before and was known to be suffering from a cough. Nevertheless, he took advantage of three false starts and won, beating Colonel Peel's Ion by a length. He died in 1843 and was buried at the Durdans.
