In the 1926-27 Scottish Cup final, played at Hampden Park on 16th April 1927 before 80,070 spectators, Celtic defeated East Fife 3-1, with goals from Robertson (own goal) McLean and Connolly, with East Fife's solitary reply coming from Wood.
The son of the legendary Celtic inside-left James 'Napoleon' McMenemy, John must be one of the luckiest player's to win a cup winner's medal during his brief stay at Celtic. He made his debut for Celtic a week before the Scottish Cup final when Jimmy McGrory broke two ribs. The following week Celtic decided to put Tommy McInally in McGrory's position at centre-forward and shortly before kick-off the Celtic manager Willie Maley told John that he was in the team. This was John's one and only Scottish Cup appearance for Celtic. He had joined Celtic from St. Roch's and joined Motherwell in October 1928 after making a total of 15 League appearances for the Glasgow side. At Motherwell he helped them win the League Championship in 1932 and participated in the Scottish Cup finals of 1931 and 1933, being a loser on both occasions.
