In their first season after their formation in 1888, Celtic were defeated by Third Lanark 2-1 in the replay of the 1888-89 Scottish Cup final played on 9th February 1889 before 16,000 spectators at Second Hampden. The first match, played on 2nd February 1889 ended in a 3-0 win for Third Lanark. However, prior to the first match taking place, both teams had decided that the final would be played as a friendly because of the snowstorm which had made the pitch uplayable. The crowd of 17,000 who attended the first match were unaware of the decision to play the match on a friendly basis and were somewhat mystified when the players on either side 'warmed-up' by having a snowball fight between them.
William Maley and his brother Thomas Edward were part of Celtic when the club was founded in 1888. William was born in April 1868 and played for Cathcart Hazelbank Juniors around 1886. He briefly played for Third Lanark before making his debut for Celtic in their opening match in May 1888. He became Celtic player/secretary in May 1894 and was reinstated as an amateur in August 1895. Thereafter their were brief loan periods to Manchester City and Everton before he rejoined Celtic as secretary/manager in April 1897. In his playing career at Celtic he totalled just short of 100 appearances for the club and scored 2 goals. He announced his resignation as Celtic manager after the Old Firm Derby at Ibrox on 1st January 1940 and retired from the club one month later.
