Col. Kidston served with the 42nd Highlanders during the second phase of the Ashanti War in 1874. He served with the 1st Battalion Black Watch in the Egyptian War of 1882, the Soudan Expedition of 1884 and the Nile Expedition of 1884-85. He was mentioned in Despatches and awarded several Medals with Clasps during his military career.
