A country parson, Hales studied sap movement in plants and made a number of important discoveries including root pressure. He was the first person to realize that carbon dioxide was supplied to plants through air, forming a vital part of the plant's food supply. His experiments, outlined in this work, had a strong influence on Ingen-Housz (see lot 277).
